Environmentally and Budget Friendly Cardboard Coffins
Recently more and more people are opting for environmentally friendly cremations and coffins. One of the ways of eco-friendly cremation is choosing cardboard coffins. Northern European countries have been doing this for the last 30 years or so, and this trend is finding acceptance in Australia as well.
Things to consider when choosing an environmentally and budget friendly cardboard coffins:
Pros:
- Environmental friendly manufacture: Cardboard casket manufacturing is far more ecologically friendly than wooden coffins. Also, the process of manufacturing is a lot simpler. Cardboard coffins are made by gluing and folding, and the cardboard is recycled. Also, the glues used are natural and made from potato starch and corn, and are biodegradable.

- Light Weight: A cardboard coffin weighs about 10 kilos. As compared to a traditional wooden coffin that can weigh as much as 50 kilos, a cardboard coffin is much lighter. However, this does not mean that a cardboard coffin cannot sustain the weight of a person. They are robust and can handle weights of 130 to 200 kilos quite efficiently and comfortably.
- Affordable and competitive pricing: Compared to a wooden coffin, cardboard coffins cost less. The price range starts from $100. As compared to this, the price of a wooden casket and you can see why cardboard coffins are more cost effective.
- Ecological: After the burial, cardboard caskets take only one year to biodegrade, while a traditional casket will take anything from 10-15 years. The amount of wood in a traditional casket is 8 times that of a cardboard one, helping in bio-degradation.
Cons:
The only drawback of a cardboard coffin is that it does not participate in the combustion process which means that gases have to be introduced to make it burn, which makes the process more polluting. 10kW more energy is required to burn a cardboard coffin as compared to a traditional wooden coffin.
Considering the pros and cons of cardboard coffins, it can be seen that they have a lot of benefits that will make them more acceptable as compared to wooden coffins.
